NPV and IRR calculator

Calculate the net present value (NPV) and the internal rate of return (IRR) of a list of cash flows. Free online: type one cash flow per line, the first being today, add a discount rate and read both results. It runs in your browser.

How to calculate NPV and IRR

  1. 1Type one cash flow per line, the first line is today
  2. 2Enter the discount rate per period
  3. 3Read the NPV, the IRR and the number of periods
  4. The net present value, the internal rate of return and the periods.

What you get

  • Nothing is uploaded.Your cash flows are calculated in your browser, not sent anywhere.
  • NPV and IRR together. Both come from the same list, so you can compare them.
  • Paste from a sheet.Lines, commas or semicolons all separate the values.

What you can do

  • Enter an initial outlay as a negative number and later returns as positive ones.
  • Set a discount rate per period and get the net present value.
  • Get the IRR, the rate at which the NPV is zero, shown with three decimals.
  • Paste a column from a spreadsheet: new lines, commas and semicolons all work.
  • See the number of periods after the first cash flow.

Good to know

  • The first value is period 0 and is not discounted. Each later value is one period further.
  • The discount rate and the IRR are per period. If your periods are months, the rate is a monthly one.
  • Without both a negative and a positive cash flow there is no IRR, and the tool says so.
  • Entries that are not numbers are ignored. At least two values are needed.
  • It is an estimate from your own numbers, not financial, tax or investment advice.

Questions

What does a positive NPV mean?

The cash flows, discounted at your rate, are worth more than they cost. At a negative NPV they are worth less.

What is the IRR?

The discount rate at which the NPV is exactly zero. If it is above the rate you require, the project clears the bar.

Why is there no IRR?

The cash flows need at least one outflow and one inflow. If all values have the same sign, no rate makes the NPV zero.

Is my data sent to a server?

No. The calculation happens in your browser.
