Normal map generator
Make a normal map from a height map or from a photo of a surface. Choose OpenGL (glTF, Blender, Unity, Godot) or DirectX (Unreal, 3ds Max), set the strength and smoothing and save a PNG. Free, in your browser, nothing uploaded.
How to make a normal map from an image
- 1Drop a height map or a photo of a surface in
- 2Set strength and smoothing, and pick OpenGL or DirectX
- 3Check the result and save the PNG
- A normal map PNG, the same size as your picture.
What happens to your files
- Nothing is uploaded.Your picture is read and turned into a normal map by your browser.
- Right for your engine.OpenGL and DirectX normal maps differ in the green channel.
- Live preview. The map updates as you move the sliders.
What you can do
- Turn the brightness of a picture into heights, then into a normal map. Light is high, and "Dark is high" flips that.
- Set the strength from 0.2 to 12 (3 is the default) to make the relief softer or deeper.
- Smooth the heights by 0 to 8 pixels so the grain of a photo does not become bumps.
- Pick OpenGL (glTF, Blender, Unity, Godot) or DirectX (Unreal, 3ds Max, CryEngine).
- Keep "Tileable edges" on so the map continues across the edge when the texture repeats.
Good to know
- The heights come from brightness only. A photo gives a rough relief, a real height map gives a better one.
- Pictures larger than 8192 pixels on a side are scaled down to 8192.
- The map has the same size as your picture. Use the power-of-two texture resizer if your engine wants 512, 1024 or 2048.
Questions
How do I make a normal map from a photo?
Drop the photo in, raise the smoothing a little so grain does not show as bumps, and tune the strength. Then save the PNG.
OpenGL or DirectX: which one do I need?
OpenGL for glTF, Blender, Unity and Godot. DirectX for Unreal, 3ds Max and CryEngine. The two differ by a flipped green channel.
Can I make a normal map from a height map?
Yes, that gives the best result. Drop the greyscale height map in, where white is high and black is low.
Is my picture uploaded?
No. It stays in your browser on your own device.
