- Compare the Navy result with the BMI estimate.
- Enter measurements in centimeters or inches, with tips on where to place the tape.
Good to know
- The Navy method is usually within 3 to 4 % of a lab scan, if the measurements are taken carefully.
- Measure the neck just below the larynx. For men the waist goes at the navel, for women at the narrowest point.
- The BMI method is rough and gives too high a value for muscular people.
- If the numbers give an implausible result, the tool asks you to check them.
Questions
How do I calculate body fat with a tape measure?
Measure your neck and waist (and hips if you are a woman), and enter them with your height. The US Navy formula turns them into a body fat percentage.
How accurate is the US Navy body fat calculator?
It is usually within 3 to 4 % of a lab scan when you measure carefully. It is an estimate, not medical advice.
Can I get body fat without a tape measure?
Yes. Choose "From BMI (no tape measure)". It is less exact, and too high for muscular people.
Is it free and private?
Yes. It needs no sign-up, and your measurements are worked out in your browser and not uploaded.
