Mesh decimator

Reduce the triangle count of a 3D model with meshoptimizer. Keep a share of the triangles or aim for an exact number, and compare the result with the original in a before and after preview. Free, in your browser, nothing uploaded.

How to reduce the polygons of a 3D model

  1. 1Drop a GLB, glTF, OBJ, STL, PLY or FBX model in
  2. 2Choose a share of triangles to keep, or a target count
  3. 3Compare before and after, then save the GLB
  4. A lighter GLB with fewer triangles.

What happens to your files

  • Nothing is uploaded. The model is simplified by your browser with WebAssembly, on your own device.
  • See what you lose. Two 3D views side by side, and a switch to show the triangles.
  • Numbers before and after.File size, triangles, vertices, meshes and materials in one table.

What you can do

  • Keep a percentage of the triangles, from 1 to 100 percent. The default is 50.
  • Or set an exact triangle count. The box starts at half of what the model has.
  • Tick "Stop early to keep the shape" so the tool stops before it ruins the form. It tells you when it did.
  • Switch on "Show triangles" to see the mesh wireframe in both views.
  • OBJ, STL, PLY and FBX files are converted to GLB first, and the result is saved as a GLB.

Good to know

  • The result is a GLB, whatever the input.
  • Heavy reduction removes detail. Sharp edges and thin parts suffer first, so check the preview.
  • With "Stop early" ticked, the result can have more triangles than you asked for. Untick it to reach the target.

Questions

How do I reduce the polygon count of a 3D model?

Drop the model in and keep a lower share of its triangles, say 50 percent, or type a target count. Check the preview, then save the GLB.

Can I set an exact number of triangles?

Yes. Choose "Triangle count" under "Reduce by" and type the number.

Does decimation change the textures?

No. The textures stay as they are. Use the glTF texture resizer if you want them smaller too.

Is my model uploaded?

No. It is processed in your browser and saved on your device.
