What happens to your files
- Nothing is uploaded.Your FBX file is read and the USDZ file is written by your browser, on your own device.
- Checked after writing. The new file is read back, and anything that did not make it across is listed.
- Units and axes are yours.Set the units, a scale and the up axis before you save.
What you can do
- Convert FBX to USDZ with one tool: choose the units, a scale factor and the up axis (Z-up or Y-up) before you save.
- See the size the model will have in the new file, and a list of what the new format cannot hold, before you convert.
- Merge all parts into one mesh, or apply transforms so the positions are baked into the vertices.
- Look at the model in the preview first. Drop the companion files (.mtl, .bin, textures) or a ZIP together with it.
Good to know
- FBX is Autodesk's format for game engines and animation tools. It holds meshes, materials, bones and animations, and is written in centimetres here.
- USDZ is USD packed in one file with its textures, made for AR on Apple devices. It is written in metres, without bone or morph animation.
- STL, OBJ and PLY have no unit, so you choose one. 3MF is written in millimetres, FBX in centimetres and the other formats in metres.
- Not every format holds everything. STL keeps only the shape, PLY has no textures, and DAE leaves animations out. The page lists this before you save.
- A glTF or OBJ result is saved as a ZIP with the .bin or .mtl file and the textures next to the model.
- FBX, 3MF and DAE are written by a 7 MB add-on that loads once, from ToolRecipe itself, the first time you pick one of them.
Questions
Is FBX to USDZ free, and is my file uploaded?
It is free, and there is no sign-up. The file is not uploaded: your browser does the conversion on your device.
Does the model keep its size?
Yes, when the file states its unit, it is carried across. If it does not, you say which unit the numbers are in. The size in the new file is shown before you save.
Why is my model turned in the new file?
Some formats are Z-up (STL, 3MF) and others Y-up (GLB, USDZ, FBX). By default the model is turned to suit the pair. Change "Up axis" to keep it as it is.
What gets lost when I convert FBX to USDZ?
It depends on the two formats. The page lists what the new format cannot hold before you save, and checks the new file after writing.
