YAML formatter

Format YAML online: tidy the indentation of a YAML file, check that it is valid, and convert it to JSON or from JSON. It reads YAML 1.2, handles files with several documents, and runs in your browser, so nothing is uploaded.

How to format YAML

  1. 1Paste your YAML or drop a .yaml file
  2. 2Leave the action on "Format" and pick the indent
  3. 3Copy the result or save it as formatted.yaml
  4. Clean, consistently indented YAML.

What you get

  • Nothing is uploaded.Configs, manifests and CI files are formatted by your browser, on your device.
  • YAML and JSON both ways.Switch the action to "YAML to JSON" or "JSON to YAML".
  • Errors are shown.A mistake in the YAML is reported instead of a broken result.

What you can do

  • Re-indent YAML with 2 or 4 spaces.
  • Validate YAML and see whether it holds one document or several.
  • Convert YAML to JSON, or JSON to YAML.
  • Use it on Kubernetes manifests, Docker Compose files, GitHub Actions workflows and other config files.

Good to know

  • YAML cannot be indented with tabs. If you choose "Tab", 2 spaces are used.
  • The tool follows YAML 1.2, so words like yes, no and on stay quoted strings and do not turn into booleans.
  • Comments and exact quoting can change when the file is rewritten. Keep the original if comments matter.

Questions

Is my YAML sent to a server?

No. It is parsed and written in your browser. Nothing is uploaded.

Can I convert YAML to JSON?

Yes. Switch the action to "YAML to JSON". For the other way, use "JSON to YAML".

Why can't I indent YAML with tabs?

The YAML format does not allow tabs for indentation. The tool uses 2 spaces instead.

Does it handle files with several documents?

Yes. It reads files with several documents separated by --- and tells you how many it found.
