Compress video

Shrink a video to a file size you choose, in MB, so it fits an upload limit. Pick a preset for Discord, WhatsApp or email, or type your own number. If the first result is still too big, the tool tries again at lower quality. Free, online, and nothing is uploaded.

How to compress a video to a size

  1. 1Drop a video in, or click to choose one
  2. 2Pick a preset or type the target size in MB
  3. 3Click "Compress" and save the result
  4. A video under your target size, saved to your device.

What happens to your video

  • Nothing is uploaded.Your video is read and compressed by your browser, on your own device.
  • You set the size. The tool works out the bitrate for your target before it starts.
  • It tries again if needed.Up to four passes, each one lower, until the file fits.

What you can do

  • Choose a target from the list (Discord, Discord Nitro Basic, WhatsApp, Gmail, Outlook) or type any size in MB.
  • Limit the resolution to 1080p, 720p or 480p, or keep the original size.
  • Keep only part of the video by giving a start and end time, like 1:20, to save space.
  • See the plan before you start: resolution, video and sound bitrate, and whether the size is too small for the length.
  • Open MP4, MOV, MKV, WebM, M4V, 3GP and TS files.

Good to know

  • The result is H.264 in an MP4 where your browser can write it, otherwise VP9 or VP8 in a WebM.
  • Sizes are counted in decimal MB (1 MB = 1,000,000 bytes), so a file made for 20 MB also fits apps that count differently.
  • A very small target for a long video is refused, and the tool names the smallest size that works.
  • If the video is already under your target and you change nothing else, the tool says so and does nothing.
  • It uses your graphics chip and works best in desktop Chrome or Edge.

Questions

How do I compress a video to under a certain size?

Drop the video in, set the target size in MB or pick a preset, and click "Compress". The tool plans the quality to fit and tries again if the first file is too big.

Will the video look worse?

Yes, a smaller file means less detail. A lower resolution cap or a shorter clip leaves more bits for the picture.

Is my video uploaded?

No. Compression runs in your browser on your own device. The video never goes to a server.

Why can't I reach a very small size?

Below a certain number of bits per second the picture is unusable. The message shows the least size possible for that length. Trim the clip or pick a bigger target.
