Extract audio from video
Extract the audio from a video and save it as M4A, MP3 or WAV, online and for free. AAC sound goes into M4A as it is, without re-encoding. Nothing is uploaded: your browser does the work.
How to extract audio from a video
- 1Drop your video in, or click to choose it
- 2Choose M4A, MP3 or WAV under "Save the sound as"
- 3Click "Extract audio" and save the file
- The sound of your video as an audio file.
What happens to your files
- Nothing is uploaded.Your video is read by your browser, on your own device.
- No account needed. You do not sign up, and nothing is added to your sound.
- No re-encoding when it can be.AAC sound goes into M4A, and MP3 sound into MP3, as it is.
What you can do
- Save the sound of an MP4, MOV or MKV video as M4A (AAC), MP3 or WAV.
- Choose 128, 192 or 320 kbit/s for M4A and MP3. WAV is uncompressed, so it has no bitrate.
- See before you start whether the sound is copied or re-encoded, and for WAV about how large the file will be.
- Keep only the sound: the video part is dropped, and the file is saved to your downloads.
Good to know
- AAC sound saved as M4A, or MP3 sound saved as MP3, is copied without re-encoding, so there is no quality loss.
- Any other combination is re-encoded, which takes longer and costs a little quality. WAV is uncompressed and large: about 10 MB per minute of stereo sound.
- A video without sound gives no file, and the tool tells you so. Your browser must support WebCodecs, otherwise the button stays off.
Questions
Is my video uploaded to a server?
No. Your browser reads the video and writes the audio on your own device. The video is never sent to us or anyone else.
How do I get the sound out of an MP4 video?
Drop the MP4 in, choose MP3, M4A or WAV under "Save the sound as" and click "Extract audio". The sound is saved to your downloads.
Which format should I choose?
M4A is recommended: it is small and plays nearly everywhere. MP3 is the most compatible. WAV is for editing, with no compression and big files.
Does extracting the audio lower the quality?
Not if the sound can be copied: AAC into M4A, or MP3 into MP3. Otherwise it is re-encoded, and a higher bitrate keeps more of the original.
