JSON formatter

Format JSON online: paste messy or one-line JSON and get it back indented and readable, with 2 spaces, 4 spaces or tabs. Big numbers keep every digit, and an error tells you the line and column. Free, and nothing leaves your browser.

How to format JSON

  1. 1Paste your JSON or drop a .json file
  2. 2Leave the action on "Format" and pick the indent
  3. 3Copy the result or save it as formatted.json
  4. Indented JSON, ready to read or paste.

What you get

  • Nothing is uploaded.Your JSON is parsed and formatted by your browser, so API responses and configs stay with you.
  • Numbers stay exact.12345678901234567890 and 1.50 come out as written, not rounded.
  • Errors point to the spot. You see the line and column, and the line itself with a mark under the problem.

What you can do

  • Indent with 2 spaces, 4 spaces or a tab.
  • Switch the action to "Sort keys", "Minify (one line)" or "Validate" without leaving the page.
  • Paste text or drop a text file into the input.
  • The result updates as you type, and you can copy it or save it as a file.

Good to know

  • Output follows the order of keys in your input. Use "Sort keys" if you want them alphabetical.
  • JSON must be strict: no comments, no trailing commas, double quotes only.
  • The tool works in the page, so a very large file depends on the memory of your device.

Questions

Is my JSON sent to a server?

No. It is parsed and formatted in your browser. Nothing is uploaded.

Why does my JSON show an error?

The message names the line and column. Common causes are a trailing comma, single quotes or a missing bracket.

Does it change large numbers like IDs?

No. A number that plain JavaScript would round, such as 12345678901234567890, is printed exactly as you wrote it.

Can I use tabs instead of spaces?

Yes. Choose "Tab" in the Indent list.
