JSON validator
Check JSON for syntax errors online. Paste or drop your JSON and the validator says whether it is valid, or shows the line and column of the first mistake with a caret under it. It runs in your browser, so nothing is uploaded.
How to validate JSON
- 1Paste your JSON, or drop a file onto the box
- 2Read the badge: Valid JSON, or the line and column of the error
- 3Fix the spot the caret points at and watch it update
- A clear valid or invalid verdict, with the error's position.
What you get
- The exact spot of the error. You see the line, the column and a caret under the character that broke it.
- Plain-language messages. For example: remove the comma before }, or use double quotes for strings.
- Nothing is uploaded.Your JSON is parsed by your browser, so API responses and configs stay with you.
What you can do
- Find out at once whether a piece of JSON is valid. The result updates while you type.
- Get the line and column of the first error, with the offending line shown and a caret under the column.
- Catch the usual mistakes: trailing commas, single quotes, missing colons, unquoted keys and text that ends too early.
- Drop a .json file instead of pasting. A valid document is printed back, tidied with 2 spaces, 4 spaces or a tab.
- Keep large numbers exact: a number such as 12345678901234567890 is not rounded.
Good to know
- Only the first error is reported. Fix it and the next one, if there is one, appears.
- This is strict JSON. Comments, single quotes and trailing commas are errors, even though some editors accept them.
- The check is syntax only. It does not compare your JSON against a schema.
- A valid result shows the JSON again, indented. Use the JSON formatter or JSON minifier when you want to change how it looks.
Questions
How do I check if my JSON is valid?
Paste it into the box. A valid document shows the Valid JSON badge. An invalid one shows the line, the column and what is wrong.
Why does my JSON say unexpected character?
Usually a comma or quote is in the wrong place. The message names the character found, and the caret shows where it sits.
Are comments allowed in JSON?
No. Standard JSON has no comments, so they are reported as an error. Remove them, then validate again.
Is my JSON sent to a server?
No. It is parsed by your browser on your own device. Nothing is uploaded.
