HEX to Color name
Find the color name for a HEX code, free and online. The page compares your color with all CSS named colors and shows the closest one, with how far off it is as a ΔE value and a swatch of both side by side. #FFC61A, for example, comes out as gold.
How to get the name of a HEX color
- 1Paste your HEX code into "Color", or choose a color with the picker
- 2Read the nearest CSS name in the big line
- 3Compare both swatches, then copy the name
- A CSS color name you can write in place of the code
How the match is found
- Measured like the eye.Colors are compared with CIEDE2000, the ΔE formula made to match how people see differences
- You see how close it is."exact" for a perfect match, otherwise "nearest, ΔE" and the distance
- Nothing is sent anywhere. The comparison runs in your browser, against a list inside the page
What you can do
- Name a HEX code: #FFC61A is closest to gold (ΔE 5.86), #2563EB to royalblue (ΔE 2.64)
- Get "exact" when your code is a named color, as with #FF6347, which is tomato
- See your color and the named one next to each other, under "Your color" and the name
- Also get the nearest Tailwind 4 and Tailwind 3 color, with their ΔE in the note under the list
- Type rgb(), hsl(), oklch() or a color from the picker instead of HEX
Good to know
- Only the CSS names are searched, about 140 distinct colors. Most HEX codes have no exact name, so you usually get the nearest one
- A ΔE below 1 is hard to tell apart. Around 2 to 5 the difference shows side by side, and above that the name is only a rough description
- Where CSS has two names for one color, you get one of them: gray rather than grey, aqua rather than cyan, fuchsia rather than magenta
- To see five close names instead of one, use the tool "Color name finder"
Questions
What is the name of my HEX color?
Paste the code into the field. The page shows the CSS color name that comes closest, and "exact" if the code is that color.
What does ΔE mean?
ΔE is the difference between two colors as people see it. This page uses CIEDE2000. Below 1 you will hardly see a difference, and the larger the number, the further the name is from your color.
Can I use the name instead of the HEX code in CSS?
Yes, every name shown is a valid CSS color. Only when it says "exact" is it the same color. Otherwise the name gives a slightly different shade.
Why does my color get a name that seems wrong?
There are only about 140 named colors to choose from, so the nearest one can still be some way off. Check the ΔE: a high value means no name fits well.
