HEX to LAB
Convert HEX to LAB online and for free: type a hex code such as #2563EB and get its CIE Lab value, lab(44.79% 21.05 -75.6), ready to copy. Lab describes a color by its lightness L, from 0 to 100, and two axes, a and b. That makes it the usual format for color matching and print specs. It all runs in your browser.
How to convert HEX to LAB
- 1Type or paste your hex code into "Color", with or without #
- 2Or choose the color with the color picker next to the field
- 3Read the Lab value in the big line and click "Copy"
- Your hex color as lab(L a b), ready to paste
What you get
- Lab and every other format.HEX, RGB, HSL, LCH, OKLCH, XYZ and more are listed under the swatch, each with its own copy button
- Nothing is sent anywhere. The numbers are worked out by your browser, on your own device
- Short codes work.On this page FC0 without a # is read as #FFCC00
What you can do
- Turn any hex code, short like #FC0 or long like #FFCC00, into CIE Lab with two decimals
- Paste a color written another way: rgb(), hsl(), oklch(), a CSS name such as tomato or a Tailwind name such as sky-500
- See LCH, OKLab and OKLCH next to Lab, plus XYZ with the D65 and the D50 white
- Find the nearest CSS color name and Tailwind color, with a ΔE (CIEDE2000) that tells you how close they are
Good to know
- Lab is calculated with the D50 white, as CSS lab() does. Programs that work with a D65 white give slightly different numbers
- Every hex code is an sRGB color, so in this direction nothing has to be moved into a smaller range
- An eight digit hex code such as #FFC61A80 is read, but its last two digits (the transparency) are left out
Questions
How do I convert hex to lab?
Type the hex code into the field. The lab() value appears straight away in the big line, and "Copy" puts it on your clipboard. #FFC61A, for example, becomes lab(83.33% 11.37 80.89).
What do L, a and b stand for?
L is lightness, from 0 for black to 100 for white. a runs from green (negative) to red (positive), b from blue (negative) to yellow (positive).
Can I paste the result into CSS?
Yes. The value is written the CSS way, as lab() with L in percent, so you can use it in a stylesheet as it is.
Is my color sent to a server?
No. The conversion is a bit of arithmetic in your browser. No request is made with your color.
