Remove background (AI)

Remove the background from a photo with AI and keep the subject at full resolution. Drop in one photo or a whole batch, then fix the edges with a brush. The AI runs on your own device, so your photos are not uploaded.

How to remove the background from a photo

  1. 1Drop your photos in, or click to choose them
  2. 2Wait for the cutout, then fix edges with "Erase" and "Restore"
  3. 3Pick a "Background" and download the PNG or ZIP
  4. A cutout with a transparent, white or colored background.

What happens to your files

  • Your photos are not uploaded. The AI model runs in your browser. It is downloaded once (94 MB), the photos never leave your device.
  • Full resolution. The mask is scaled up to the size of your photo, so the cutout is not a small preview.
  • A brush for the last touch.Paint away leftovers or bring back parts the AI cut off, and compare with "Show original".

What you can do

  • Cut out the subject of any photo (PNG, JPG, WebP, AVIF, GIF and more) with BiRefNet-lite, an open AI model that runs on your device.
  • Process several photos in one go. Each one shows its state, and a batch downloads as one ZIP.
  • Correct the result with "Erase" and "Restore" at a brush size you set. "Undo all edits" goes back to what the AI made, and "Show original" lets you compare.
  • Choose the "Background": "Transparent (PNG)", "White (JPG)" or a "Color (JPG)" with a "Fill color" of your own.
  • It uses the graphics chip (WebGPU) when your browser has it and the processor otherwise, and tells you which one it runs on.

Good to know

  • The model is about 94 MB and is downloaded the first time you use the tool. After that your browser can reuse it.
  • Without WebGPU it runs on the processor and is slower. The tool says on a phone to expect up to a minute per photo.
  • If the device runs out of memory, the tool asks you to close other tabs or try a smaller photo.
  • White and colored backgrounds are saved as JPG. Only the transparent option gives a PNG.

Questions

Is it free, and are my photos uploaded?

It is free and needs no account. The photos are processed on your device. Only the AI model is downloaded, once.

Does it keep the full resolution?

Yes. The AI works on a smaller version, and its mask is scaled up to the full size of your photo.

Can I remove the background from many photos at once?

Yes. Drop several photos in. They are done one after another and download as one ZIP.

The edges are not perfect. What now?

Use "Erase" to remove leftovers and "Restore" to paint back what was cut away. For plain white or black backgrounds, the dedicated color tools can be cleaner.
