Make PNG transparent

Make a PNG transparent by clicking the color you want gone. A tolerance slider catches shades close to it. You see the result at once and download a PNG with a transparent background. Free, online, and the image stays in your browser.

How to make a PNG transparent

  1. 1Drop in an image or click to choose it
  2. 2Click the color to make transparent, then set "Tolerance"
  3. 3Click "Download PNG"
  4. A PNG where the clicked color is see-through.

What happens to your files

  • Nothing is uploaded. The pixels are changed by your browser, on your own device.
  • You pick the color.Click a spot in the image, and every pixel close to that color becomes transparent.
  • Easy to take back.Remove a color from the list, or choose "Start over" to begin again.

What you can do

  • Click any color in the image to make it transparent. "Tolerance" (0 to 120, starts at 40) decides how far from the clicked color a pixel may be and still disappear.
  • Hold Shift, Ctrl or Cmd while clicking to add more colors. The "Colors removed" list shows each one, and the × next to a color brings it back.
  • Tick "Only the area connected to my click" to clear only the area around your click and keep the same color elsewhere, for example inside a letter.
  • Tick "Trim empty edges" to cut away the transparent border when you download.

Good to know

  • It works on one image at a time. A JPG or other image can be opened too, the result is always a PNG named like your file plus "-transparent".
  • Soft edges and shadows are not one color, so a low tolerance leaves a halo and a high one eats into the subject. For photos, the AI background remover is the better tool.
  • Colors are matched by their RGB values, so a color that looks flat but is noisy (a scanned page) needs more tolerance.

Questions

How do I make a PNG transparent for free?

Open the image, click the color that should go and download the PNG. It costs nothing, needs no sign-up and runs in your browser.

Can I remove more than one color?

Yes. Shift-click (or Ctrl-click) other colors to add them. Each one appears in the list and can be brought back.

Why is there still a fringe around my subject?

Edge pixels are a mix of both colors. Raise "Tolerance" a little, and try "Only the area connected to my click" so the subject itself is left alone.

Is my image sent anywhere?

No. The change is made on a canvas in your browser, and the file is never sent to a server.
