Remove black background
Remove a black background from an image and get a transparent PNG. Made for logos and graphics photographed or scanned on dark paper, and for renders on black. Tolerance slider included. Free, online, and nothing leaves your browser.
How to remove a black background
- 1Drop in an image or click to choose it
- 2Raise "Tolerance" until the dark background is gone
- 3Click "Download PNG"
- A PNG with the black background cleared.
What happens to your files
- Nothing is uploaded. The black is cleared by your browser, and the image stays on your device.
- Black inside stays.By default only black connected to the edges is removed, so dark details in the subject remain.
- Black is picked for you.Open the image and the dark background is cleared straight away.
What you can do
- The black background is cleared the moment you open the image, starting from the four corners and spreading through every connected black or near-black pixel.
- "Tolerance" (0 to 120, starts at 40) sets how dark a pixel may be and still go. Raise it for dark gray paper or a soft vignette.
- Untick "Only the area connected to my click" to clear all near-black pixels, including black enclosed by the subject.
- Click another color in the image to remove it instead, or Shift-click to add it. "Start over" returns to black.
- "Trim empty edges" crops the transparent border when you download.
Good to know
- Dark parts of the subject that touch the edge (black hair, a black outline) can go along with the background. Lower the tolerance if you see this.
- It handles one image at a time and saves a PNG named like your file plus "-transparent", even from a JPG.
- Real shadows and glow are not removed cleanly, because they are gradients and not one black.
Questions
How do I remove a black background from an image?
Open the image. The black is cleared at once. Raise "Tolerance" if dark gray is left, then download the PNG.
Can I use it for a logo on black paper?
Yes, that is a typical use. Photograph or scan the logo, open it here, and save the PNG. Light logos keep their color.
Why did parts of my subject disappear?
They were close to black and touched the edge. Lower "Tolerance", or click "Start over" and pick a different color.
Is my picture uploaded?
No. The processing happens in your browser.
