  2. 2Read "Words" and the other counts below it

  • Updates as you type.No button to press, every keystroke updates the panel.
  • Nothing is uploaded. The text is counted in your browser and stays on your device.

What you can do

  • Check an essay or article against a word limit.
  • See how long a text takes to read (230 words a minute) or to speak (140 words a minute).
  • Count unique words and see the 15 most-used words of the text.
  • Count the paragraphs of a text: a blank line starts a new one.

Good to know

  • A word is a run of letters and digits. "Well-known" counts as two words and "don't" as two.
  • Numbers count as words, punctuation on its own does not.
  • The tool counts pasted text. It does not open Word or PDF files, so copy the text out first.

Questions

How does the word counter count words?

It counts runs of letters and digits, in any language. Spaces, line breaks and punctuation separate them.

Does it work for German, Dutch and other languages?

Yes. Letters with accents and umlauts count as part of a word, and other alphabets are counted too.

Is my text uploaded?

No. Everything is counted by your browser. The text never leaves your device.
