Sentence counter

Count the sentences in a text, free and online. Paste your writing and see the number of sentences next to words, paragraphs and reading time. Nothing is uploaded: the counting is done in your browser.

How to count sentences

  1. 1Paste or type your text into the box
  2. 2Read the number next to "Sentences"
  3. 3Edit your punctuation and watch it change
  4. A sentence count that updates live.

What you get

  • Counts by punctuation.A sentence ends at a full stop, question mark or exclamation mark.
  • Updates as you type. The number follows every keystroke, there is no button.
  • Nothing is uploaded.Your text stays in your browser on your own device.

What you can do

  • Count sentences in an essay, an email or a product description.
  • Spot very long or very short texts by comparing sentences with the word count shown beside it.
  • Treat a text without end punctuation as one sentence.

Good to know

  • A sentence ends at ".", "?" or "!" followed by a space or the end of the text. A number like 3.5 does not end a sentence.
  • Abbreviations such as "e.g." followed by a space are counted as sentence ends.
  • A text with no closing punctuation counts as 1 sentence, an empty box as 0.

Questions

How does the tool decide where a sentence ends?

At a full stop, question mark or exclamation mark that is followed by a space or the end of the text.

Are abbreviations a problem?

They can be. "e.g. this" looks like the end of a sentence to the counter, so the total can be a little high in texts full of abbreviations.

Is my text uploaded?

No. The sentences are counted by your browser and the text never leaves your device.
