Unique word counter

Count how many different words a text uses, free and online. Paste your text and see the number of unique words next to the total word count. Nothing is uploaded: your browser does the counting.

How to count unique words

  1. 1Paste or type your text into the box
  2. 2Read "Unique words" and compare it with "Words"
  3. 3Edit the text and watch both numbers change
  4. The number of distinct words in your text.

What you get

  • Capitals do not matter."The" and "the" are counted as the same word.
  • Next to the total.Compare unique words with the full word count to see how much you repeat.
  • Nothing is uploaded. The text is analysed in your browser and stays on your device.

What you can do

  • Count the distinct words in an essay, a speech or a product description.
  • Compare it with the total word count to judge how varied your vocabulary is.
  • See the most-used words of the same text in the list below the numbers.

Good to know

  • Words are runs of letters and digits, so "don't" counts as "don" and "t", and numbers count as words.
  • Different forms of a word, like "walk" and "walked", are counted as different words.
  • Only the case is ignored, accents are not: "café" and "cafe" are two words.

Questions

Is "Word" the same as "word"?

Yes. The tool ignores capitals, so both count as one unique word.

Are "run" and "running" one word?

No. Each form counts on its own. The tool compares the words as written and does not reduce them to a stem.

Does the tool show which words repeat?

It lists the most-used words below the numbers. For a longer list with counts, the word frequency counter is the better tool.
