UUID validator & decoder

Check whether a string is a valid UUID or ULID and decode it: version, variant, canonical form and, for time-based IDs, the exact date and time it was made. It accepts UUIDs with or without hyphens or braces. Runs in your browser, nothing uploaded.

How to validate and decode a UUID

  1. 1Open "Decode an ID" and paste a UUID or ULID
  2. 2Read the version, variant and canonical form
  3. 3For v1, v6, v7 and ULID, read the creation time
  4. A table with the ID's kind, version, variant and time.

What you get

  • Nothing is uploaded. The ID is read by your browser, so internal IDs stay private.
  • Time in two zones.Time-based IDs show the creation time in UTC and in your own time zone.
  • Clear errors. If the text is not a UUID or ULID, you are told to check for missing or extra characters.

What you can do

  • Accept UUIDs with or without hyphens, and with braces like {…}.
  • Show the kind (UUID or ULID), the canonical lowercase form and the version.
  • Name the variant: NCS (old), RFC 9562, Microsoft or future.
  • Read the creation time of UUID v1, v6, v7 and ULID, and the node (MAC) of a v1.
  • Recognise the nil UUID of all zeros.

Good to know

  • A UUID v4 is random and has no time in it, so the tool says so and shows no date.
  • The check is on the shape: 32 hex digits, or a 26-character ULID. It does not prove that the ID exists anywhere.
  • Versions 3, 5 and 8 are shown with their version number but have no time to decode.

Questions

How do I know which version a UUID is?

Look at the first digit of the third group. In 018f3a4e-8c2b-7d1a-9f00-1234567890ab it is 7, so this is a v7. The tool reads it for you.

Can I find out when a UUID was created?

For v1, v6 and v7, yes. A v4 is random and has no time.

Does it check ULIDs too?

Yes. Paste a 26-character ULID to see the time it was made and its random part.

Is my ID sent anywhere?

No. It is decoded in your browser.
