SHA-512 hash generator

Calculate the SHA-512 hash of text online, free. You get the 128-character hex digest, the longest of the SHA-2 family here. The other hashes are listed with it, and nothing is uploaded.

How to calculate a SHA-512 hash online

  1. 1Type or paste your text, or drop a text file
  2. 2Read the hash in the list as you type
  3. 3Press the copy button, or choose Uppercase
  4. A 128-character SHA-512 digest, in hex.

What happens to your data

  • Nothing is uploaded. The hash is calculated in your browser. Your text and files stay on your device.
  • The longest digest.128 hex characters, 512 bits, with the biggest safety margin.
  • Other hashes included.SHA-256, SHA-384 and more appear in the same list.

What you can do

  • Get the SHA-512 of any text, updated as you type.
  • Show the digest in capitals with "Uppercase".
  • Add an HMAC key to see HMAC-SHA-512 next to it.
  • Drop a file on the "File checksum" tab to get its SHA-512, and paste a published value to compare.

Good to know

  • SHA-512 is secure for integrity and signatures, and on 64-bit computers it is often as fast as SHA-256.
  • Like all plain SHA-2 hashes it is too fast for passwords. Use bcrypt or Argon2.
  • The text is hashed as UTF-8, exactly as typed. Even one extra space gives a different digest.

Questions

What is SHA-512?

A SHA-2 hash function that turns data into a 512-bit fingerprint, written as 128 hex characters.

Is SHA-512 better than SHA-256?

It is longer, not necessarily more useful. Both are secure. Choose the one the other side expects.

How long is a SHA-512 hash?

128 hex characters, or 64 bytes.

Can I hash a file with SHA-512?

Yes. Open the "File checksum" tab and drop the file. All hashes appear, SHA-512 among them.
