Diff checker (code)
Compare two versions of code side by side and see which lines were added or removed, with the changed words marked inside each line. Paste or drop both versions: the comparison runs in your browser and nothing is uploaded.
How to compare two code files
- 1Paste or drop the original on the left
- 2Paste or drop the changed version on the right
- 3Read the result, side by side or inline
- Added and removed lines, changed words marked.
What happens to your code
- Nothing is uploaded. Both versions are compared by your browser, on your own device.
- Changes down to the word.Changed lines are paired up and the words that differ are marked.
- Short context.Three unchanged lines surround each change, the rest is folded away.
What you can do
- Show the two versions side by side with line numbers, or inline with the removed lines above the added ones.
- Mark the words that changed inside a changed line, so a renamed variable stands out.
- Ignore whitespace or letter case, for example to skip a re-indent.
- Unfold the unchanged lines with "Show unchanged lines", or click a fold to open it.
- Swap the two sides with one click, and copy the difference as a unified diff text.
Good to know
- Side by side needs a wide window. On a narrow screen the result is shown inline instead.
- The tool compares lines. A block of code that moved shows up as removed in one place and added in another.
- Up to 6000 rows are drawn. For a longer result, copy the unified diff text.
- For JSON or YAML where the order of keys does not matter, use JSON diff or YAML diff.
Questions
How do I compare two code files online?
Paste the original on the left and the changed version on the right, or drop the files in. The differences appear at once, with added and removed lines coloured.
Can I ignore whitespace changes?
Yes. Tick "Ignore whitespace" and lines that differ only in spaces or tabs count as the same. "Ignore case" does the same for capital letters.
Is my code uploaded anywhere?
No. The comparison runs in your browser. Your code is not sent to us or anyone else.
What is the difference to the text diff checker?
Both use the same comparison. This one opens in the side by side view, which suits code.
