Text diff checker

Compare two texts and see what changed: line by line and word by word, side by side or inline. Paste the original and the changed version, and additions and removals are marked. The comparison runs in your browser, so nothing is uploaded.

How to compare two texts

  1. 1Paste the original text on one side
  2. 2Paste the changed text on the other
  3. 3Read the marked changes, side by side or inline
  4. Every added, removed and changed line, with words marked.

What you get

  • Nothing is uploaded. Both texts are compared in your browser and never leave your device.
  • Lines and words.Changed lines are paired up and the words that differ are highlighted inside them.
  • Two views.Switch between side by side and inline, whichever reads better.

What you can do

  • Compare two versions of a text, a contract, an article or a piece of code.
  • Switch between "Side by side" and "Inline" layouts. On a narrow window the inline view is used.
  • Choose "Ignore whitespace" or "Ignore case" to hide differences that do not matter.
  • Choose "Show unchanged lines" to see the whole text instead of only the changes with a few lines around them.
  • Use "Swap sides" to flip original and changed, and copy the difference as a unified diff, like diff -u produces.
  • Switch the mode to JSON or YAML to compare data by its keys and values instead of its lines.

Good to know

  • The tool tells you when the texts are identical, or when only whitespace or case differs and you chose to ignore it.
  • A long result shows the first 6000 lines. Copy the unified diff for the rest.
  • The comparison is on lines first: a word changed inside a line is marked within that line, a moved paragraph shows as a removal and an addition.
  • In JSON and YAML mode, key order and number formatting are ignored.

Questions

How do I compare two texts online?

Paste the original into the left box and the changed text into the right box. Differences are marked straight away, no sign-up needed.

Can it ignore spaces or capital letters?

Yes. Tick "Ignore whitespace" or "Ignore case" and differences of that kind are no longer reported.

Are my texts uploaded?

No. The comparison runs in your browser and nothing is sent anywhere.

Can I get the differences as text?

Yes. Open "Copy the difference as text" for a unified diff you can copy or save.
