YAML diff
Compare two YAML files by their data, not by their lines. Key order and quoting do not matter: you get a list of every key that was added, removed or changed, with its path. Paste or drop both files, nothing is uploaded.
How to compare two YAML files
- 1Paste or drop the original YAML on the left
- 2Paste or drop the changed YAML on the right
- 3Read the list of changed paths
- A table of added, removed and changed paths.
What happens to your YAML
- Nothing is uploaded. Both files are parsed and compared by your browser, on your own device.
- Data, not layout.Key order, indentation and number formatting are ignored.
- Exact paths. Each change shows where it is, like spec.ports[1], with before and after.
What you can do
- Show every added, removed and changed value in a table with its path, the old value and the new value.
- Count the changes at the top: how many were added, removed and changed.
- Show both files again as key-sorted JSON, side by side, so you can see the changes in context.
- Report a YAML error for the side it comes from, so you know which file to fix.
- Copy the list of changes as text, or swap the two sides.
Good to know
- Lists are compared by position. Insert one item at the start and the items after it count as changed.
- Compare one YAML document per side. A file with several documents separated by --- is not compared as a whole.
- Comments are not part of the data, so a change that only touches a comment shows as "Same data".
- Both sides must contain YAML. To compare plain text line by line, use the text diff.
Questions
How do I compare two YAML files?
Paste the original on the left and the changed file on the right. The tool lists every path that was added, removed or changed.
Does the order of keys matter?
No. Keys are matched by name, so two files that differ only in key order are reported as the same data.
Why does the diff say "Same data" when the files look different?
Comments, indentation, quoting and key order are not data. If the values are equal, the files are the same to the tool.
Is my YAML sent to a server?
No. It is parsed and compared in your browser. Config files with secrets stay on your device.
