YAML validator
Check YAML for syntax errors online. Paste or drop a YAML file and the validator tells you if it is valid, or shows the line and column where the parser gave up. It reads YAML 1.2 in your browser, so nothing is uploaded.
How to validate YAML
- 1Paste your YAML, or drop a file onto the box
- 2Read the badge: Valid YAML, or the line and column of the error
- 3Fix the marked line and watch the result update
- Valid YAML, or the line and column of the error.
What you get
- Line and column of the error. The line is shown with a caret under the column, so you see what to fix.
- Multi-document files counted.A file with several documents separated by --- is checked as a whole.
- Nothing is uploaded.Your YAML is parsed by your browser, so configs and secrets stay with you.
What you can do
- Check a YAML config, such as a Docker Compose, Kubernetes or CI file, for syntax errors. The result updates while you type.
- See the line and column of the error, with the line shown and a caret under the spot.
- Validate a file with several documents. The result says how many it holds.
- Drop a .yaml or .yml file instead of pasting it.
- Get the YAML back, tidied with 2 or 4 spaces. Tab is not a YAML indent, so the tidied copy uses 2 spaces.
Good to know
- The check follows YAML 1.2. Words such as yes, no and on are plain text there, not true and false, and stay as they are.
- Only the first error is reported. Fix it and the next one, if there is one, appears.
- Tabs cannot be used to indent YAML. If your file has tab indents, the error points at them.
- The check is about syntax. It does not know whether a Compose or Kubernetes file has the right keys.
Questions
How do I check if my YAML is valid?
Paste it into the box. Valid YAML shows the Valid YAML badge. If there is a mistake, you see the line, the column and a short reason.
Why does my YAML fail because of indentation?
YAML uses spaces to show structure, and one space too many or too few changes the meaning. The caret points at the line where the parser got lost.
Can I validate a file with several documents?
Yes. Documents separated by --- are all checked, and the badge tells you how many there are.
Is my YAML uploaded anywhere?
No. It is parsed by your browser on your own device. Nothing is uploaded.
