- 2The HEX code shows in the big line, #FF6347 for tomato
- 3Copy it, or any other notation from the list
- The HEX code behind the name
Good to know first
- All 148 CSS names. The full list of named colors from CSS Color 4, rebeccapurple included
- Typed the way you like.Light Blue, light_blue and LIGHTBLUE are all read as lightblue
- Nothing is sent anywhere. The name is looked up in a list inside the page
What you can do
- Look up the HEX code of any CSS color name, for example tomato is #FF6347 and rebeccapurple is #663399
- Copy the same color as rgb(), hsl(), hwb(), lab() or oklch() from the list
- Pick a color with the color picker, and the field shows the CSS name that comes closest
- Type a Tailwind name such as sky-500 as well. It is read with the Tailwind 4 palette
- See the nearest Tailwind 4 and Tailwind 3 color for the name in the same list
Good to know
- Only the names CSS defines are known. Everyday names like mustard or mint are not, while sky blue works because it is read as skyblue
- Gray and grey are both CSS spellings and give the same code, for example darkgray and darkgrey are both #A9A9A9
- Some names share one color: aqua and cyan are both #00FFFF, fuchsia and magenta both #FF00FF
- transparent and currentcolor are keywords, not colors with a HEX code, so they are not read
Questions
What is the HEX code of a color name?
Type the name into the field and the HEX code appears right away. Tomato is #FF6347, gold is #FFD700 and navy is #000080.
How many color names does CSS have?
CSS Color 4 lists 148 named colors. Some are two spellings of the same color, like gray and grey, so there are fewer distinct colors than names.
What color is rebeccapurple?
#663399, rgb(102, 51, 153). It was added to CSS in memory of Rebecca Meyer, daughter of the web designer Eric Meyer.
Can I use the HEX code instead of the name in CSS?
Yes. A browser shows the name and its HEX code as exactly the same color. HEX is useful in tools that do not know CSS names.
