Hex decode

Decode hexadecimal back to readable text online. Paste a hex string and the text appears as you type. Spaces, commas and any other non-hex characters are skipped, and the bytes are read as UTF-8. Nothing is uploaded: it runs in your browser.

How to decode hex to text

  1. 1Paste the hex string into the input box
  2. 2Read the decoded text in the result box
  3. 3Copy it, or tidy the input if the text looks wrong
  4. The text behind the hex bytes, read as UTF-8.

What you get

  • Messy input is fine.Spaces, line breaks, colons and commas are ignored, upper or lower case.
  • Nothing is uploaded. The hex is decoded by your browser, on your own device.
  • UTF-8 aware.c3a4 comes out as ä, not as two stray characters.

What you can do

  • Turn a hex string into text. Each pair of digits is one byte.
  • Paste dumps written as 48 65 6c 6c 6f, 48:65:6c:6c:6f or 48656c6c6f. Everything that is not 0 to 9 or a to f is dropped.
  • Read non-English text, since the bytes are decoded as UTF-8.
  • Copy the result with one click.

Good to know

  • A prefix like 0x is not understood. The x is dropped but the 0 stays and shifts the pairs, so remove the prefixes first.
  • If the number of digits is odd, the last single digit is ignored.
  • Bytes that are not valid UTF-8, such as binary data, show as replacement characters. This tool decodes text only.
  • Letters outside a to f are silently dropped, so a typo can change the result without an error.

Questions

How do I convert hex to text?

Paste the hex string into the input box. The text shows in the result box at once.

Can the hex have spaces?

Yes. Spaces and other separators are skipped before decoding.

Why is my result garbled?

The bytes may not be UTF-8 text, or a prefix like 0x has shifted the pairs. Check the input and try again.

Is my data uploaded?

No. Your browser does the decoding and nothing is sent.
