HTML entities decode

Decode HTML entities back to plain text online. Named entities like & and é and numeric ones like ä or € are turned into the characters they stand for. Uses your browser's own HTML parser, and nothing is uploaded.

How to decode HTML entities

  1. 1Paste the text with entities into the input box
  2. 2Read the plain text in the result box
  3. 3Copy it, or check any tags that disappeared
  4. Plain text with every entity turned into its character.

What you get

  • Every entity the browser knows.Named, decimal and hex entities are all handled by the HTML parser.
  • Nothing is uploaded. The decoding runs in your browser, on your own device.
  • Updates as you type. The result follows every edit.

What you can do

  • Turn &, <, ",   and the full list of named entities into characters.
  • Decode numeric entities, both decimal (ä) and hexadecimal (ä).
  • Clean up text copied from HTML source, feeds or old database exports.
  • Copy the result with one click.

Good to know

  • The input is parsed as HTML. Real tags such as <b>bold</b> are removed and only their text is kept. Encoded ones like &lt;b&gt; come out as <b>.
  • Whitespace is treated the way HTML does it, so it is best for text snippets, not for whole pages.
  • An entity written without its closing semicolon may or may not decode, as in browsers.
  • Decoded text is plain text. Do not put it into a page without escaping it again.

Questions

How do I decode HTML entities?

Paste the text into the input box. The decoded text shows in the result box straight away.

Does it decode &amp; and &nbsp;?

Yes, and all other named entities, plus numeric ones in decimal or hex form.

Why did my tags vanish?

The input is read as HTML, so real tags are dropped and only the text inside stays. Entities like &lt; are decoded to < instead.

Is my text uploaded?

No. Your browser decodes it and nothing is sent.
