JSON string decode

Decode a JSON string back to plain text online. Paste a quoted string with \n, \" or \u00e4 in it and get the real line breaks, quotes and letters. Errors point to the line and column. Nothing is uploaded: it runs in your browser.

How to decode a JSON string

  1. 1Paste the JSON string, with its quotes, into the input box
  2. 2Read the unescaped text in the result box
  3. 3Copy it, or fix the input if an error shows
  4. The text with every escape turned into its real character.

What you get

  • Escapes resolved.\n, \t, \" and \uXXXX all come out as the characters they stand for.
  • Nothing is uploaded. The string is decoded by your browser, on your own device.
  • Clear errors.A broken string gives a message with line and column.

What you can do

  • Turn \n and \t into real line breaks and tabs, and \" into a quote mark.
  • Read \uXXXX sequences as the letters they stand for, such as \u00e4 for ä.
  • Make a long single-line string from a log or an API response readable.
  • Copy the result with one click.

Good to know

  • The input must be valid JSON. For a string that means double quotes around it, for example "Hello\nWorld".
  • If the input is not a string but other valid JSON, such as an object or a number, it is shown formatted instead.
  • Single-quoted or unquoted text is not valid JSON and gives an error.
  • Large numbers inside such JSON keep their exact digits.

Questions

How do I unescape a JSON string?

Paste the string, including its double quotes, into the input box. The plain text shows in the result box.

Why do I get an error?

The input is not valid JSON, often because the quotes are missing or a backslash is wrong. The message names the line and column.

Does it handle \u escapes?

Yes. A sequence like \u00e4 becomes ä.

Is my text uploaded?

No. The decoding runs in your browser and nothing is sent.
