Unicode escape encode

Convert text to Unicode escape sequences online. Every character outside plain ASCII becomes \uXXXX, or \u{...} for emoji and other characters above U+FFFF, while ASCII stays readable. For JavaScript, JSON and Java strings. Nothing is uploaded.

How to escape text as Unicode

  1. 1Paste or type your text into the input box
  2. 2Read the escaped version in the result box
  3. 3Copy it into your source code or JSON
  4. ASCII text with \u escapes for everything else.

What you get

  • ASCII stays readable.Only characters above U+007F are escaped, so code and words keep their shape.
  • Nothing is uploaded. The text is converted by your browser, on your own device.
  • Emoji handled.A character above U+FFFF becomes one \u{...} escape, not two halves.

What you can do

  • Turn ä, ß, €, Cyrillic, Chinese and other non-ASCII characters into \uXXXX with four hex digits, lowercase.
  • Write emoji and other characters above U+FFFF as one \u{...} escape.
  • Make a string safe to keep in a file that is not UTF-8.
  • Copy the result with one click.

Good to know

  • The \u{...} form with braces works in JavaScript, but JSON and Java do not accept it. There, surrogate pairs (\ud83d\ude00) are needed.
  • Only non-ASCII characters are changed. Quotes and line breaks are not escaped, use the JSON string encode tool for that.
  • Letters are written in lowercase hex, such as \u00e4.
  • To go back, use the Unicode escape decode tool.

Questions

How do I convert text to \u escapes?

Paste your text into the input box. The result box shows non-ASCII characters as \uXXXX sequences.

What happens to emoji?

An emoji is written as one \u{...} escape.

Does JSON accept \u{...}?

No. JSON needs a pair such as \ud83d\ude00. The braces form is valid in JavaScript only.

Is my text uploaded?

No. The conversion runs in your browser and nothing is sent.
