Unicode escape decode
Decode Unicode escape sequences back to readable characters online. \u00e4 becomes ä, \u20ac becomes €, and \u{...} becomes the emoji. Surrogate pairs like \ud83d\ude00 are joined correctly. Nothing is uploaded: it runs in your browser.
How to decode \u escapes
- 1Paste the text with \u escapes into the input box
- 2Read the readable text in the result box
- 3Copy it into your document or message
- Text with every \u escape turned into its character.
What you get
- Both escape forms.\uXXXX with four digits and \u{...} with braces are decoded.
- Nothing is uploaded. The text is decoded by your browser, on your own device.
- Rest stays untouched.Only \u escapes change, the other text is left as it is.
What you can do
- Turn \uXXXX sequences (four hex digits, any case) into characters.
- Decode the brace form \u{...} for characters above U+FFFF.
- Join surrogate pairs such as \ud83d\ude00 into the single emoji they stand for.
- Make text from logs, JSON or JavaScript source readable again, then copy it.
Good to know
- Only \u escapes are decoded. Other escapes such as \n, \t or \x41 stay as they are. For those, the JSON string decode tool helps with \n and \t.
- A \u that is not followed by four hex digits or braces is left unchanged.
- A lone surrogate half, such as \ud83d alone, shows as a broken character.
- Characters that are not escaped pass through unchanged.
Questions
How do I decode \u escapes?
Paste the text into the input box. The result box shows the characters instead of the \uXXXX sequences.
Does it handle emoji?
Yes. Both the braces form and the pair \ud83d\ude00 come out as the emoji.
Does it decode \n too?
No, only \u escapes. Use the JSON string decode tool for \n and \t.
Is my text uploaded?
No. The decoding runs in your browser and nothing is sent.
