Compress PDF
Make a PDF smaller for email or an upload form, free and online. Choose how much to shrink it, or give a size to fit under. Photos are re-encoded, text stays text you can select. Nothing is uploaded: the work happens in your browser.
How to compress a PDF
- 1Drop a PDF in, or click to choose one
- 2Pick how much: Light, Balanced, Strong or a size
- 3Click Compress, the smaller PDF is saved
- A smaller PDF, saved as name-compressed.pdf.
What happens to your files
- Nothing is uploaded.Your PDF is read and shrunk by your browser, on your own device.
- Text stays sharp.Only embedded photos are re-encoded; text and drawings are kept.
- Never bigger. If it can't get smaller, you get your original back.
What you can do
- Three levels: "Light: best quality", "Balanced" and "Strong: smallest file".
- "Fit under a size": type 200 KB or 1.5 MB and the tool searches for the best image quality that still fits.
- A lossless pass comes first: it drops metadata and thumbnails, merges duplicate objects and compresses streams.
- Optional "Scan-style pages": every page becomes a picture, much smaller, at 150, 100 or 72 dpi.
- "Keep metadata" keeps author, software and dates. Without it they are removed.
Good to know
- A password-protected PDF is refused. Unlock it first, then compress it.
- Scan-style pages are pictures: the text can't be selected and links are gone. Use it only when the normal result is still too big.
- A PDF that is mostly text may already be small. Then there is little to win, and you may get the original back.
- If the size can't be reached, the tool says so and offers the smallest version it made.
Questions
How do I compress a PDF without losing quality?
Choose "Light: best quality". It re-encodes photos at a high quality and leaves text and drawings as they are.
Is my PDF uploaded to compress it?
No. The file is processed in your browser and never sent to a server.
Can I make a PDF smaller than 200 KB?
Yes, choose "Fit under a size" and type the limit. The tool tries image qualities until the file fits, and tells you if it can't.
Why is my PDF still large?
Often it holds large photos or scans. Try "Strong: smallest file", or the scan-style option at a lower resolution.
Does the file name change?
Yes. Your PDF is saved as the original name plus -compressed.pdf.
