Use one tool
JSON escape/unescape
Turn any text or JSON into a JSON string with the quotes and backslashes escaped, or turn an escaped JSON string back into plain text. Use it to put JSON inside JSON, or to read a string from a log. It runs in your browser.
How to escape or unescape JSON
- 1Paste your text or JSON into the input
- 2The result appears as you type
- 3Copy the escaped or unescaped text
- One JSON string, or the plain text inside it.
What you get
- Escape and unescape in one.Plain text is escaped, a quoted JSON string is unescaped. No switch needed.
- Valid JSON strings.Quotes, backslashes, line breaks and tabs become \", \\, \n and \t.
- Nothing is uploaded. The text is converted by your browser, on your own device.
What you can do
- Wrap a JSON document in an escaped string, so it can sit as a value inside another JSON document.
- Turn a string like "{\"id\":1}" back into the readable text it holds.
- Escape multi-line text, so line breaks become \n and the text fits on one line.
- Handle any text, not only JSON: a SQL query, a log line or a paragraph with quotes works as well.
Good to know
- The tool decides by the input. Text that is a complete JSON string in double quotes is unescaped. Anything else is escaped.
- When you escape, the result starts and ends with a double quote. Leave them out if you paste it between your own quotes.
- Input that is valid JSON but not a string, such as {"a":1} or 42, is escaped like any other text. It is not unescaped.
- Non-ASCII letters such as ä or é are kept as they are. For \uXXXX sequences use the Unicode escape tool.
Questions
How do I escape JSON inside a JSON string?
Paste the JSON into the tool. It returns one string with the quotes and backslashes escaped, ready to use as a value in another JSON document.
How do I unescape a JSON string?
Paste the string with its surrounding double quotes. The tool returns the plain text, with \n turned into real line breaks.
Why did my escaped text get escaped again?
Only a complete string in double quotes is unescaped. If the quotes are missing, the input counts as plain text and is escaped.
Is my text uploaded?
No. The conversion runs in your browser and nothing is sent anywhere.
