Base64 decode

Decode Base64 to readable text online. Paste a Base64 string and the decoded text appears as you type. Spaces and line breaks in the string are ignored, and the bytes are read as UTF-8. Nothing is uploaded: decoding runs in your browser.

How to decode Base64 to text

  1. 1Paste the Base64 string into the input box
  2. 2Read the decoded text in the result box
  3. 3Copy it, or fix the input if an error shows
  4. The original text, read as UTF-8.

What you get

  • Nothing is uploaded. The string is decoded by your browser, on your own device.
  • Line breaks are fine.Whitespace is removed before decoding, so wrapped Base64 works.
  • Errors are shown.A string that is not valid Base64 gives a message instead of a wrong result.

What you can do

  • Decode standard Base64 (A to Z, a to z, 0 to 9, + and /) back to text.
  • Paste Base64 that was wrapped over several lines, as in emails or PEM blocks. Spaces and line breaks are dropped first.
  • Read non-English text. The decoded bytes are interpreted as UTF-8, so umlauts and emoji show correctly.
  • Copy the result with one click.

Good to know

  • This is for the standard alphabet. A string with - and _ is Base64URL and needs the Base64URL decode tool.
  • If the bytes are not valid UTF-8, for example an image or a zip file, the result shows replacement characters. It decodes text, not files.
  • Padding with = should be correct. A string with a wrong length can give an error.
  • Decoded does not mean safe. Do not run or trust decoded content you did not expect.

Questions

How do I decode Base64 online?

Paste the Base64 string into the input box. The decoded text shows in the result box right away.

Is my data uploaded?

No. Your browser decodes the string on your device. Nothing is sent anywhere.

Why do I get an error?

The string is probably not valid standard Base64. It may use - and _ (that is Base64URL), contain other characters, or be cut off.

Can I decode a Base64 image?

This tool shows text. Image data would appear as unreadable characters, so it is not the right tool for that.
