Base64URL encode

Encode text as Base64URL, the URL-safe form of Base64 used in JWTs and web links. It swaps + and / for - and _ and drops the = padding, so the result can sit in a URL or file name as it is. Runs in your browser, nothing is uploaded.

How to encode text as Base64URL

  1. 1Paste or type your text into the input box
  2. 2Read the Base64URL string in the result box
  3. 3Copy it into your URL, token or file name
  4. A Base64URL string with no padding.

What you get

  • Safe in URLs.No +, / or = in the result, so nothing needs percent-encoding.
  • Nothing is uploaded. The text is encoded by your browser, on your own device.
  • Updates as you type.Edit the input and the result changes straight away.

What you can do

  • Turn text into Base64URL: A to Z, a to z, 0 to 9, - and _.
  • Build the parts of a JWT by hand, or check one, since JWTs use this exact form.
  • Encode text in any script. It is converted to UTF-8 bytes first.
  • Copy the result with one click.

Good to know

  • The = padding is removed. A decoder that needs padding must add it back, and the Base64URL decode tool here does so for you.
  • Standard Base64 and Base64URL strings are not interchangeable. A string with + or / is standard Base64.
  • Base64URL is not encryption. Anyone can decode it.
  • This tool encodes text only, not files.

Questions

What is Base64URL?

It is Base64 with a URL-safe alphabet: - instead of +, _ instead of /, and no = padding. JWTs and many web APIs use it.

How do I encode text as Base64URL?

Paste your text into the input box. The Base64URL string shows in the result box straight away.

What is the difference from Base64?

Only three things: the two replaced characters and the missing padding. The underlying bytes are encoded the same way.

Is my text uploaded?

No. The encoding runs in your browser and nothing is sent.
