Base64URL decode

Decode Base64URL to text online, for example the payload of a JWT or a token from a link. It accepts the - and _ alphabet and adds back missing = padding for you. Nothing is uploaded: decoding runs in your browser.

How to decode Base64URL

  1. 1Paste the Base64URL string into the input box
  2. 2Read the decoded text in the result box
  3. 3Copy it, or fix the input if an error shows
  4. The original text, read as UTF-8.

What you get

  • Padding is added for you.Strings without = at the end decode like any other.
  • Nothing is uploaded. The string is decoded by your browser, on your own device.
  • Updates as you type. The result follows every edit, errors included.

What you can do

  • Decode Base64URL (A to Z, a to z, 0 to 9, - and _) back to text.
  • Read the JSON inside a JWT part, such as the header or the payload. Paste one segment at a time, without the dots.
  • Decode strings with no = padding. The right amount is added before decoding.
  • Copy the result with one click.

Good to know

  • Paste a single segment. A whole JWT with dots will not decode as one string. For a full token use the JWT decoder.
  • Decoding a JWT does not check its signature. Anyone can read a token's content.
  • Standard Base64 with + and / does not decode here. Use the Base64 decode tool for that.
  • If the bytes are not valid UTF-8, the result shows replacement characters.

Questions

How do I decode a Base64URL string?

Paste it into the input box. The decoded text shows in the result box at once.

Can I decode a JWT here?

Yes, one part at a time: paste the header or the payload without the dots. The JWT decoder tool shows all parts together.

Does it need the = padding?

No. Missing padding is added automatically.

Is my token sent anywhere?

No. Your browser decodes it on your device. Nothing is uploaded.
