Text to slug

Turn a title into a URL slug: lowercase letters, numbers and hyphens, with umlauts and accents handled. Paste a headline and get a clean slug for a web address, a file name or a CMS field. Nothing is uploaded.

How to make a slug from a title

  1. 1Type or paste your title into the Input box
  2. 2The slug appears in the Result box
  3. 3Copy the slug into your URL or CMS
  4. A lowercase slug with hyphens, ready for a URL.

What you get

  • Nothing is uploaded. The slug is made in your browser and your text stays on your device.
  • Umlauts handled.ä, ö, ü and ß become ae, oe, ue and ss, other accents are dropped.
  • Updates as you type. The slug follows your title at once, no button needed.

What you can do

  • Make a slug in lowercase letters a to z and digits.
  • Replace spaces and punctuation with a single hyphen, no doubled hyphens.
  • Turn German umlauts and ß into ae, oe, ue and ss, and strip accents from letters such as é, ñ or ç.
  • Trim hyphens from the start and end.

Good to know

  • Only the letters a to z and the digits 0 to 9 are kept. Letters of other alphabets, such as Cyrillic, Greek or Chinese, are dropped, not transliterated.
  • The whole input becomes one slug: several lines are joined with hyphens.
  • Words are not shortened or filtered, so stop words like "the" stay in. Cut them by hand if you want a shorter slug.
  • Check that the slug is not already used on your site.

Questions

How do I turn a title into a slug?

Paste the title into the Input box. The Result box shows it in lowercase, with hyphens between the words.

What happens to ä, ö, ü and ß?

They become ae, oe, ue and ss. Other accents, like in é or ñ, are removed and the plain letter stays.

Why is part of my title missing?

The slug only keeps a to z and digits. Letters from other alphabets are removed.
