Good to know
- The tool works in one direction only: umlauts to ae, oe, ue and ss. It does not turn ae, oe, ue or ss back into umlauts, as that would also change words like "Michael" or "Strasse" wrongly.
- A capital ẞ is not converted.
- Other accents, such as é or ñ, are not changed. To strip those as well, use Remove accents or Text to slug.
- An ALL CAPS word becomes "Ae" and "Oe", not "AE" and "OE", so it is worth a quick look.

How do I write ä, ö and ü as ae, oe and ue?

Can it convert ae back to ä?
No. This tool only goes from umlauts to the two-letter spelling. Going back would be guesswork, because many words have a real "ae" or "ue" in them.
Does it change accents like é or è?
No. Only ä, ö, ü, Ä, Ö, Ü and ß are converted.
