Reading time calculator

Find out how long a text takes to read and to say out loud. Paste an article, a speech or a script and get a reading time and a speaking time in minutes, free and online. Nothing is uploaded.

How to calculate reading time

  1. 1Paste or type your text into the box
  2. 2Read "Reading time" and "Speaking time"
  3. 3Cut or add text until it fits your slot
  4. Reading and speaking time in minutes.

What you get

  • Two times in one.Reading time is based on 230 words a minute, speaking time on 140.
  • Always at least 1 minute. The result is rounded to whole minutes and never shows less than 1.
  • Nothing is uploaded.Your text is analysed in your browser and stays on your device.

What you can do

  • Estimate how long a blog post or article takes to read silently.
  • Estimate how long a speech, a talk or a voice-over takes to say aloud.
  • See the word count that the times are based on, with characters, sentences and paragraphs.

Good to know

  • The speeds are fixed averages: 230 words a minute reading, 140 speaking. You cannot change them, and a slow or fast reader will differ.
  • Words are counted as runs of letters and digits, so "don't" counts as two words.
  • Tables, images and pauses in a talk are not taken into account.
