Character counter

Count the characters in any text, with and without spaces, for free and online. Paste your text and the numbers update as you type. Nothing is uploaded: the counting happens in your browser.

How to count characters

  1. 1Paste or type your text into the box
  2. 2Read "Characters" and "Characters without spaces"
  3. 3Edit the text and watch the numbers change
  4. Two character counts, updated live.

What you get

  • Both counts at once."Characters" includes spaces and line breaks, "Characters without spaces" leaves out all white space.
  • Updates as you type. There is no button to press, the numbers follow every keystroke.
  • Nothing is uploaded.Your text stays in your browser on your own device.

What you can do

  • Count characters with spaces and without them in one step.
  • See words, sentences, paragraphs and lines for the same text, in the same panel.
  • Check how long a text is before you paste it into a form, a bio or a message field.
  • Count emoji and letters outside the English alphabet as one character each.

Good to know

  • The tool shows the count only. It has no ready-made limits for platforms such as X or Instagram, so compare the number with the limit yourself.
  • "Characters without spaces" also removes tabs and line breaks, not just the space bar.
  • Counting is by Unicode character, so an emoji made of several parts, like a flag, can count as more than one.

Questions

Does the character counter include spaces?

Yes, "Characters" counts everything, spaces and line breaks included. "Characters without spaces" shows the count with all white space removed.

Can I check a text against a platform's limit?

The tool shows the number of characters. It does not know the limits of individual platforms, so you compare the number with the limit yourself.

Is my text sent anywhere?

No. The text is counted by your browser and never leaves your device.
