Line counter

Count the lines in a text, a list or a pasted log, free and online. The number updates as you type, and nothing is uploaded: your browser does the counting.

How to count lines

  1. 1Paste or type your text into the box
  2. 2Read the number next to "Lines"
  3. 3Add or delete lines and watch it change
  4. A line count that follows your text.

What you get

  • Every line counts.A new line starts at each line break, blank lines included.
  • Updates as you type. The number changes with every keystroke, no button needed.
  • Nothing is uploaded. The text is counted in your browser and stays on your device.

What you can do

  • Count the lines of a list, a CSV export, a log or a poem.
  • See words, characters, sentences and paragraphs for the same text at the same time.
  • Handle Windows and Unix line endings alike.

Good to know

  • Blank lines are counted as lines. If you only want the lines with text, remove the empty ones first.
  • A line is whatever sits between two line breaks. Long lines that your screen wraps are still one line.
  • An empty box shows 0 lines, a single word shows 1.

Questions

Are empty lines counted?

Yes. Each line break starts a new line, so blank lines are part of the total. Remove empty lines first if you want only the filled ones.

Does a wrapped line count twice?

No. Only real line breaks count. A long line that wraps on the screen is still one line.

Can I count the lines of a file?

Paste the contents of the file into the box. The tool counts what is in the box and does not read files.
