Sort lines alphabetically
Sort lines alphabetically, A to Z, with natural sorting: "file2" comes before "file10". Paste a list of names, words or file names and copy it back in order. Nothing is uploaded.
How to sort lines alphabetically
- 1Paste your list, one item per line, into the Input box
- 2The sorted list appears in the Result box
- 3Copy the result
- Your lines in A to Z order.
What you get
- Nothing is uploaded. The sorting happens in your browser and your list stays on your device.
- Natural order.Numbers inside lines are compared as numbers, so 2 comes before 10.
- Sorts as you type. The result updates with every change, no button needed.
What you can do
- Put names, words, file names or keywords in A to Z order.
- Sort lines that contain numbers in the order a person expects: item 2 before item 10.
- Sort in the language of your browser, so letters such as ä, é or å land where that language puts them.
Good to know
- The order is A to Z only. For Z to A, copy the result into Reverse lines.
- Each line is one item, and blank lines are sorted along with the rest. They end up at the top.
- The sort follows the language's rules, not the code of each letter, so "b" lands between "a" and "c" whether it is a capital or not.
- Duplicates are kept. Use Remove duplicate lines to drop them.
Questions
How do I sort a list alphabetically?
Paste the list into the Input box, one item per line. The Result box shows it sorted from A to Z.
What is natural sort?
Numbers inside text are read as numbers. So "img2" comes before "img10", where a plain sort would put "img10" first.
Can I sort from Z to A?
Not in this tool. Sort A to Z, then run the result through Reverse lines.
