Sort lines by length

Sort lines by length, shortest first. Paste a list and see it ordered from the briefest line to the longest, for example to spot the longest title, check headlines or tidy a word list. Nothing is uploaded.

How to sort lines by length

  1. 1Paste your lines, one per line, into the Input box
  2. 2The lines appear sorted in the Result box
  3. 3Copy the result
  4. Your lines, shortest first.

What you get

  • Nothing is uploaded. The sorting happens in your browser and your text stays on your device.
  • Length is counted in characters.Spaces count too, so "a b" is longer than "ab".
  • Ties keep their order.Lines of the same length stay in the order you gave them.

What you can do

  • Order words, titles, headlines or keywords from shortest to longest.
  • Find the longest line fast: it ends up at the bottom.
  • Check which lines are too long for a field or a limit, such as a title or a tweet.

Good to know

  • The order is shortest first. For longest first, copy the result into Reverse lines.
  • Length is the number of characters in the line as you pasted it, spaces included. Some emoji count as two.
  • Blank lines have length zero and go to the top.
  • Line breaks are not counted.
