Trim whitespace

Trim whitespace from every line: spaces and tabs at the start and end of each line are removed. Paste text copied from a PDF, an email or a spreadsheet and get clean lines back. Nothing is uploaded.

How to trim whitespace from lines

  1. 1Paste your text into the Input box
  2. 2The trimmed lines appear in the Result box
  3. 3Copy the result
  4. Your text, with no spaces at the start or end of any line.

What you get

  • Nothing is uploaded. The trimming happens in your browser and your text stays on your device.
  • Line by line. Each line is trimmed on its own, so your line structure is kept.
  • Updates as you type. The result changes with every keystroke, no button needed.

What you can do

  • Remove leading and trailing spaces and tabs from every line.
  • Remove indentation, so every line starts at the left edge.
  • Clean up lists copied from emails, PDFs or spreadsheets before you sort or compare them.

Good to know

  • Spaces inside a line are not touched. To squeeze double spaces in the middle, use Remove extra spaces.
  • Empty lines stay in the text. Use Remove empty lines to drop them.
  • Non-breaking spaces and other special whitespace at the edges are removed too, but most zero-width characters are not. Show invisible characters finds them.
  • Line breaks are kept as they are, so the number of lines does not change.

Questions

How do I remove spaces at the start and end of lines?

Paste the text into the Input box. The Result box shows every line without leading or trailing spaces.

Does it remove spaces between words?

No. Only the edges of each line are trimmed. Remove extra spaces handles the spaces inside a line.

Does it remove blank lines?

No. Blank lines stay, but any spaces in them are removed. Use Remove empty lines to delete them.
