Fix broken PDF line breaks
Text copied out of a PDF often breaks in the middle of every sentence. This tool joins those lines back into running text and glues words that were split with a hyphen at the line end. Free, and nothing is uploaded.
How to fix broken line breaks from a PDF
- 1Copy the text from your PDF and paste it in
- 2The lines are joined in the result box
- 3Copy the repaired text
- Running paragraphs, ready to edit or quote.
What you get
- Paragraphs survive.A single line break becomes a space. A blank line between paragraphs stays.
- Split words come back.A word cut with a hyphen at the line end is joined, so exam-\nple becomes example.
- Stays on your device.Your text is repaired in your browser and is never uploaded.
What you can do
- Join lines that the PDF cut in the middle of a sentence.
- Remove the hyphen and line break when a word was split across two lines and the next line starts in lower case.
- Keep blank lines, so paragraphs stay separate.
- Copy the result into a document, an email or a translator.
Good to know
- A hyphen at the end of a line is removed only when the next line starts with a lower-case letter. Before a capital, as in a name, it stays.
- A real hyphenated word that happens to break at the hyphen, like well-\nknown, loses its hyphen and becomes wellknown. Check those by eye.
- Lists, tables and poems lose their line breaks too, because the tool cannot tell a layout break from a PDF break.
- Only line breaks are touched. Double spaces stay. Remove extra spaces handles those.
- Text from a scanned PDF must be recognised as text first. This tool does not read images.
Questions
How do I remove line breaks from text copied from a PDF?
Paste the text. Each single line break becomes a space and the paragraphs stay separate. Then copy the result.
Why does text from a PDF have line breaks in the middle of sentences?
A PDF stores lines as they sit on the page, not as paragraphs, so copying carries the page's line breaks along.
Does it remove hyphens at the end of a line?
Yes, when the next line starts with a lower-case letter. The two halves of the word are joined.
Will it join all my paragraphs into one block?
No. A blank line between two paragraphs is kept. Use Remove line breaks if you want one single line.
