Straight quotes to smart quotes
Turn straight quotes into smart quotes: plain " and ' become curly quotation marks and apostrophes, like a word processor makes them. Paste text from code, a plain text file or a chat and get typographic quotes back. Nothing is uploaded.

- 1Paste your text into the Input box
- 2Curly quotes appear in the Result box
- 3Copy the result into your document
- Your text with typographic quotes and apostrophes.
What you get
- Nothing is uploaded. The conversion happens in your browser and your text stays on your device.
- Opening and closing quotes. The tool decides which side a quote belongs on from the character before it.
- Updates as you type. The result follows your input at once, no button needed.
What you can do
- Turn "double quotes" into “curly double quotes”.
- Turn 'single quotes' into ‘curly single quotes’.
- Turn apostrophes, as in don't or it's, into the curly ’.
- Keep everything else in your text as it is.
Good to know
- A quote at the start of the text or after a space, an opening bracket ( or [ becomes an opening quote. Every other quote becomes a closing one.
- The result uses English style: “ ” and ‘ ’. German low quotes („ “) and French « » are not made.
- A quote after a dash or another quote, as in nested quotes, is read as a closing one, so check such cases by eye.
- Quotes that are already curly are left alone.
Questions
How do I make quotes curly?
Paste your text into the Input box. Straight quotes and apostrophes come out curly in the Result box.
Does it make German quotes like „…“?
No. It makes the English style “…” and ‘…’. For German low quotes you would replace them by hand or in your word processor.
Why is an opening quote closing the wrong way?
The tool looks at the character before the quote. After a space or an opening bracket it opens, otherwise it closes. A quote right after a dash or another quote can come out wrong.
