Smart quotes to straight quotes

Turn curly quotes into straight quotes: smart quotes from Word, Google Docs or a website become plain " and ' characters. Handy before you paste text into code, JSON, a spreadsheet or a plain text field. Nothing is uploaded.

How to change smart quotes to straight quotes

What you can do

  • Replace the curly double quotes “ and ” with a straight ".
  • Replace the low double quote „ with a straight " as well, which helps with German and Dutch text.
  • Replace the curly single quotes ‘ and ’ with a straight ', which also turns curly apostrophes into plain ones.
  • Replace the low single quote ‚ with a straight '.

Good to know

  • Angle quotes such as « » and ‹ › are not changed.
  • Prime marks and other look-alike symbols stay as they are.
  • Quotes carry no memory of their direction afterwards: to get curly quotes back, use Straight quotes to smart quotes.

Questions

Why do curly quotes break my code or JSON?

Programming languages and JSON only accept straight quotes. Curly quotes from word processors count as ordinary characters and cause errors.

Does it handle German and Dutch quotes?

Yes. The low opening quotes „ and ‚ are replaced as well as the curly ones.

Does it change anything else in my text?

No. Only quotation marks and apostrophes are replaced, everything else is untouched.
