Add line numbers

Put a number in front of every line of your text: 1. first line, 2. second line, and so on. Paste the text and the numbered version appears at once. Free, no sign-up, and nothing leaves your browser.

How to add line numbers to text

  1. 1Paste or type your text into the input box
  2. 2Read the numbered lines in the result box
  3. 3Click copy and paste them where you need them
  4. The same text, each line numbered.

What you get

  • Numbers as you type. The result updates with every change, so there is no button to press.
  • Stays on your device.Your text is numbered in your browser and is never uploaded.
  • Nothing to set up.No sign-up and no options: paste, copy, done.

What you can do

  • Number every line from 1 upwards in the form "1. text".
  • Number code, lyrics, quotes, contracts or lists so people can refer to a line by its number.
  • Copy the result with one click.
  • Take the numbers off again with Remove line numbers.

Good to know

  • Every line gets a number, empty lines included. Remove empty lines first if you do not want them counted.
  • The numbering always starts at 1 and counts up by one. Start value and format cannot be changed.
  • A line is whatever sits between two line breaks, so a long paragraph that wraps on screen is still one line.

Questions

How do I add line numbers to text online?

Paste the text into the input box. Each line gets a number in the result box straight away. Then copy it.

Can I start at a number other than 1?

No. The numbering starts at 1. You can renumber elsewhere or edit the first numbers by hand.

Are empty lines numbered too?

Yes. An empty line gets a number like any other. Use Remove empty lines before numbering if you want them gone.

Can I undo the numbering?

Yes. Paste the numbered text into Remove line numbers and the numbers come off again.
