Add quotes and commas to list
Turn a list with one item per line into 'a','b','c': each item in single quotes, separated by commas. Made for an SQL IN (...) clause or an array in code. Free, runs in your browser, and your list is never uploaded.
How to add quotes and commas to a list
- 1Paste your list, one item per line
- 2The quoted list appears in the result box
- 3Copy it into your query or code
- One 'quoted', comma-separated item per line.
What you get
- Safe for SQL strings. An apostrophe inside an item is doubled, so O'Brien becomes 'O''Brien'.
- Cleans as it goes.Blank lines are dropped and spaces around each item are trimmed.
- Stays on your device.Your list is formatted in your browser and is never uploaded.
What you can do
- Wrap every line in single quotes and put a comma after it, except the last.
- Build the list for WHERE id IN ('a','b','c') from a column copied out of a spreadsheet.
- Prepare string lists for arrays in JavaScript, Python or SQL scripts.
- Copy the result with one click.
Good to know
- Only single quotes are used, and the items are put on separate lines, each ending in a comma. There is no option for double quotes or a one-line output. For one line, run the result through Remove line breaks.
- The doubled apostrophe is the SQL way to escape. Code in other languages may need a backslash instead.
- Numbers are quoted too. For a numeric list use List to comma separated.
Questions
How do I put quotes around each line of a list?
Paste the list with one item per line. Every item comes back in single quotes with a comma after it, ready to copy.
How do I make an SQL IN list from a column?
Copy the column from your spreadsheet, paste it here and copy the result between the brackets of IN (...).
What happens to apostrophes inside an item?
They are doubled, which is how SQL escapes a quote inside a string. O'Brien becomes 'O''Brien'.
Can I use double quotes instead?
No, this tool only makes single quotes. You can change them afterwards with Find and replace text.
