Caesar cipher to text

Decode a Caesar cipher back to readable text, free and online. Paste the scrambled message and the letters are shifted back by three places, the classic Caesar shift. Nothing is uploaded: your browser does the work.

How to decode a Caesar cipher

  1. 1Paste or type the text into the box
  2. 2Read the result below, it appears as you type
  3. 3Copy the result with the copy button
  4. The message with every letter moved back by three.

What you get

  • Classic shift of three.D becomes A, E becomes B, and so on, wrapping around from A back to X.
  • Result as you type.No button to press, the result changes with every keystroke.
  • Nothing is uploaded. The conversion runs in your browser, the text stays on your device.

What you can do

  • Decode messages made with the standard Caesar shift of three places.
  • Keep capitals as they are: upper and lower case letters are both shifted.
  • Leave digits, spaces and punctuation untouched, so the layout of the message stays.

Good to know

  • The shift is fixed at three. Messages made with another shift, such as ROT13, will not come out readable.
  • Only the letters A to Z are shifted. Letters like ä, é or ß stay as they are.
  • A Caesar cipher is easy to break and is no protection for private information.

Questions

Which shift does this tool use?

Three places, the shift Julius Caesar is said to have used. It moves each letter three places back in the alphabet.

Can I decode a message with another shift?

Not with this tool. It always shifts by three. For a shift of 13, use the ROT13 tool.

What happens to numbers and punctuation?

They stay exactly as they are. Only letters from A to Z are changed.
