Text to ROT13

Encode text with ROT13 online: every letter moves 13 places in the alphabet, so "hello" becomes "uryyb". Because the alphabet has 26 letters, the same step also decodes it. Type or paste, free, no sign-up, nothing uploaded.

How to encode text with ROT13

  1. 1Type or paste your text into the input box
  2. 2Read the ROT13 text in the result box
  3. 3Click "Copy" to take it with you
  4. Your text with every letter moved 13 places.

What you get

  • Nothing is uploaded. The coding runs in your browser, so your text stays on your device.
  • Updates as you type. The result follows every keystroke, with no button to press.
  • Encodes and decodes.Run ROT13 twice and you get your original text back.

What you can do

  • Move every letter A to Z by 13 places, wrapping around: N becomes A and A becomes N.
  • Keep upper and lower case, so "Hello" becomes "Uryyb".
  • Leave digits, spaces and punctuation untouched.
  • Decode ROT13 text by pasting it in again, or use ROT13 to Text.

Good to know

  • ROT13 is a fixed shift of 13. There is no setting for other shifts.
  • Only the letters A to Z change. Accented letters such as ä or é stay as they are.
  • ROT13 hides text from a quick glance, for spoilers or puzzle answers. It is not encryption.

Questions

What is ROT13?

A letter substitution that replaces each letter with the one 13 places later. It is used online to hide spoilers and punchlines.

How do I decode ROT13?

Paste the coded text into this tool. Applying ROT13 a second time returns the original.

Why 13 and not another number?

The alphabet has 26 letters, so 13 is exactly half. Encoding and decoding are then the same step.

Is ROT13 secure?

No. Anyone can reverse it in a second. Use it only to keep text from being read by accident.
